A Familiar Mouse Gets a Magnetic Makeover

Keychron has been on a bit of a roll lately with its MagOpt switch technology, and now the peripheral maker is bringing that hardware to one of its more distinctive products. As reported by TechPowerUp on August 10, 2026, Keychron is refreshing its M4 fingertip gaming mouse with MagOpt magnetic optical switches and a new lineup of translucent retro colorways.

The M4 is a compact mouse built specifically for fingertip grip users, a style that typically demands a smaller, lighter form factor. The current M4 8K packs a PixArt PAW 3950 sensor and standard Huano mechanical switches, and it sits at $69.99 on Keychron’s online store. The updated version aims to swap out those mechanical switches for the MagOpt alternative, which Keychron introduced alongside its G6 HE wireless gaming mouse earlier this summer.

What We Know, and What We Don’t

Keychron has confirmed four color options for the new M4: Frosted Lavender, Frosted Ice, Frosted Smoke, and Frosted Mint. Those translucent, retro-tinged finishes match the aesthetic direction the company took with the G6 HE, which launched with seven similar color choices. For anyone who has been waiting for that look in a smaller, fingertip-oriented package, this seems to be the answer.

Beyond the colors and the switch upgrade, though, details are thin. According to TechPowerUp, Keychron has not yet confirmed whether the M4 MagOpt will feature the newer PixArt PAW 3955 sensor that appears in the G6 HE, or whether it will carry the open-source firmware that made that mouse notable among enthusiasts. The current M4 uses the PAW 3950, a capable but slightly older sensor, so an upgrade would be a meaningful improvement. Whether Keychron decides to include it remains to be seen.

Pricing is similarly up in the air. The existing M4 8K at $69.99 and the G6 HE launching at around $90 give a reasonable bracket, and TechPowerUp notes the M4 probably won’t require a full retooling, suggesting the price might land closer to the lower end of that range. But nothing is official yet.

The Magnetic Switch Moment

Magnetic optical switches have become a serious talking point in the mouse market over the past year. Logitech’s HITS technology kicked off a wave of competing designs, and brands including Keychron have moved quickly to introduce their own takes. MagOpt is Keychron’s answer to that trend, combining magnetic actuation with optical detection to eliminate the physical contact points that wear out in traditional mechanical switches.

The G6 HE was Keychron’s first mouse to ship with MagOpt, and it leaned hard into the enthusiast angle with swappable batteries, a 46-gram build, and open-source firmware. The M4 MagOpt seems to be a more focused product, one that takes the switch technology and the color personality from that launch and applies it to a smaller, more specialized form factor.

For fingertip grip users who have been watching the magnetic switch market develop, this announcement is worth tracking. Keychron has not provided a release date alongside the reveal, so the waiting game continues. Given that the G6 HE details surfaced in late July and the M4 MagOpt news is landing in August, a relatively near-term launch window seems plausible, though nothing has been confirmed. The color names alone suggest Keychron knows its audience.
