For a while, getting an Intel Arc GPU to behave on SteamOS required a fair amount of patience and a tolerance for experimental driver flags. That era appears to be ending. According to a new video from ETA Prime, the YouTuber widely known for his deep testing of gaming handhelds and SteamOS hardware, the Intel Arc B580 now boots on Valve’s Linux-based operating system cleanly, no special workarounds required. That is genuinely good news for anyone building or buying a SteamOS device that is not AMD-centric.

Forza Horizon 5 told a slightly different story. At 1440p and high settings without upscaling, the B580 managed 75 to 85 FPS with occasional dips into the 60s. ETA Prime noted that the same configuration on Windows runs in the mid-80s, which means SteamOS is leaving a bit of performance behind in that particular title. It is a gap worth watching, but not a dealbreaker for a platform still maturing its support for non-AMD hardware.

The XeSS Problem Is Real, But Specific

Here is where things get complicated. The Mesa driver that SteamOS relies on does not currently support Intel’s Xe Matrix eXtensions, the dedicated XMX hardware inside Arc GPUs that makes XeSS run the way it is supposed to. XeSS can technically execute on SteamOS, but without XMX acceleration, both image quality and performance take a hit compared to a proper Windows installation. More significantly, XeSS Multi-Frame Generation is completely disabled in this configuration.

For a GPU where XeSS is one of the headline selling points, especially as Intel continues pushing XeSS 2.0, this is a notable limitation. The good news is that it is a software problem, not a hardware one. Mesa driver development is an active, community-driven process, and Intel has been contributing more aggressively to open-source graphics stacks over the past couple of years. XMX support is not a permanent dead end; it is a gap that someone will eventually close.

In the meantime, the games that lean heavily on XeSS for performance headroom will not show their best on this platform. Titles that run well natively at target frame rates, like Elden Ring and Fallout 4, simply sidestep the issue entirely.

Valve has been straightforward about the fact that its own Steam Machine hardware uses AMD silicon. But the company has also been consistent about keeping SteamOS open enough for other vendors and users to do as they please with it. The B580 situation is a small but clear sign that this philosophy has real engineering effort behind it.
