Tides of Annihilation Producer Admits Gwendolyn Face Render Was 'Rushed'

Eclipse Glow Games lead producer Fu Kun addressed fan backlash over visible changes to the main character's face in the latest 40-minute gameplay reveal, saying the lighting optimization work was incomplete.

Forty Minutes of Footage, One Very Noticed Face

Eclipse Glow Games had plenty to show off when it dropped 40 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay footage for Tides of Annihilation in mid-August. Combat looked sharp. Exploration drew praise. The art direction landed well with viewers across social media and gaming communities.

Then people got a good look at Gwendolyn’s face.

The main character’s facial design appeared noticeably softer than in previous trailers, with different lighting characteristics that caught fans off guard. Reactions ranged from mild puzzlement to outright frustration. “Why are they changing the character model? Seems stupid and a huge waste of money,” one commenter wrote on X, according to IGN’s reporting. “Why does the newer one look so much worse? This isn’t a great sign,” said another. On YouTube, one viewer offered a more measured read: “She still looks really good but it did feel kinda different when I saw it… I thought they had downgraded graphics or something.”

The calls to revert the changes spread quickly enough that Eclipse Glow Games felt the need to respond directly.

The Producer Steps In

In a Q&A, lead game producer Fu Kun addressed the elephant in the room head-on. A reporter from Game Tea House asked whether the earlier promotional videos had used pre-rendered CG while the new footage switched to real-time rendering, which would explain the visual gap. Fu Kun pushed back on that framing.

“Actually, the previous PV also used real-time rendering,” he said, as reported by IGN. “The female lead’s face shape is consistent in the latest PV and the current demo. It’s just that we wanted it to be smoother in terms of lighting optimization, so there are some differences and imperfections in the facial rendering.”

He did not sugarcoat the situation entirely. “Of course, this version may have been a bit rushed, and we will further optimize the facial rendering under lighting later,” Fu Kun added. It is a candid admission, and one that will probably do more to settle the debate than a non-answer would have.

Fu Kun also used the Q&A to talk about the studio’s broader design philosophy for the game’s characters. “In terms of character design, we prioritized aesthetics that are acceptable to both Easterners and Westerners, and we made a comprehensive fusion of both,” he said. He added that certain characters in the game will lean more explicitly into Chinese cultural touchstones, pointing to the Martial Saint as a figure representing Eastern chivalry and traditional Chinese culture who will appear as Gwendolyn’s master.

A Rocky Month for Gwendolyn

The face controversy is just the latest bump for the game’s protagonist. In mid-July, acclaimed voice actress Jennifer English announced she was leaving the role, citing concerns about her mental and physical health. English had been associated with the project and her departure drew significant attention, particularly given her profile following work on other major titles.

At her own recommendation, English reportedly suggested a replacement. IGN noted rampant speculation that the new voice is Angela Sant’Albano, known for voicing Grace Ashcroft in Resident Evil, though neither the studio nor Sant’Albano have officially confirmed this.

Tides of Annihilation still does not have a firm release date. Eclipse Glow Games has only said the game will arrive “soon,” which leaves the studio time to follow through on Fu Kun’s promise to keep refining Gwendolyn’s look before players get their hands on it. Given how closely fans are already watching every frame of footage, they will almost certainly notice whether the work gets done.

FAQ
Why does Gwendolyn look different in the latest Tides of Annihilation gameplay footage?

According to lead producer Fu Kun, the changes stem from ongoing lighting optimization work on the facial rendering. He acknowledged the version shown in the August gameplay reveal was 'a bit rushed' and said the team plans to continue refining it.

Was the previous Tides of Annihilation trailer using pre-rendered CG?

No. Fu Kun clarified in a Q&A that both the earlier promotional footage and the latest gameplay demo used real-time rendering. The differences viewers noticed are the result of lighting adjustments, not a switch between render methods.

Who is voicing Gwendolyn after Jennifer English left the project?

Jennifer English announced she was stepping away from the role in mid-July 2026 due to health concerns. There is speculation, as reported by IGN, that Angela Sant'Albano has taken over the role at English's own recommendation, though this has not been officially confirmed.

When does Tides of Annihilation release?

No official release date has been announced. Eclipse Glow Games has described the window as 'soon.'
