Nomura Takes the Stage

Fans of the Kingdom Hearts series have developed a certain reflex over the years. A release window gets announced, cautious optimism sets in, and then the wait begins to stretch. So when Square Enix revealed at Disney’s D23 conference in Anaheim, California on Friday that Kingdom Hearts 4 would arrive in late 2027, it did not take long for the skeptics to speak up online.

Tetsuya Nomura, the co-creator and series designer who has directed every mainline Kingdom Hearts title, apparently noticed. At a dedicated Kingdom Hearts panel held at D23 on Saturday night, Nomura made a surprise appearance on stage and addressed the hand-wringing directly.

“We announced that the game is going to be coming late 2027,” Nomura said through an on-stage interpreter. “And I saw online that some people were saying ‘oh, you know, maybe the actual release date might still get pushed back.’ I just wanted to set the record straight: that is not happening.”

He also offered some reassurance for fans hoping to hear more about the game before it lands. “A lot of the marketing for the game has only just started, and so I do hope that people also look forward to hearing more news as well.”

What D23 Actually Revealed

The panel was not just a vibe check. Square Enix used the D23 weekend to share a meaningful amount of new Kingdom Hearts 4 information, giving attendees and fans watching from home something concrete to chew on.

On the world-building front, the company confirmed the first Disney-themed world players will visit: the vibrant, afterlife-spanning setting of Pixar’s Coco. It is an interesting choice, one that leans into the kind of emotionally rich, visually distinctive Pixar territory the series has explored before.

Perhaps the bigger surprise, though, came alongside the game announcement itself. Square Enix also revealed that a Kingdom Hearts animated series is currently in development, with plans to bring it to both Disney+ and Disney Channel. Details on that project remain sparse, but its existence alongside a mainline game release points to a coordinated push to expand the franchise’s footprint.

Four Years of Waiting

Kingdom Hearts 4 was originally revealed back in 2022, meaning fans have been sitting with the knowledge of its existence for a long stretch before any firm window materialized. The D23 announcements, coming roughly two months after new gameplay footage re-introduced the title after that long silence, represent the most substantial update the series has received in years.

Nomura’s personal appearance at the panel carries some weight here. He did not send a producer or a PR statement. He walked out on stage and looked at the audience. The directness of his message, specifically calling out the online skepticism by name, suggests the team is aware of its reputation and wants to manage expectations from the front end rather than walk anything back later.

Whether late 2027 holds is, of course, something only time will confirm. But for now, the man who has shaped Kingdom Hearts from the beginning has put his name behind that window in about as public a setting as the franchise could ask for.
