FF7 Revelation Gets Gamescom ONL Showcase With Director Hamaguchi
Square Enix has confirmed a 'new look' at Final Fantasy 7 Revelation during Gamescom's Opening Night Live on August 25, with director Naoki Hamaguchi set to appear on stage.
Hamaguchi Takes the Stage in Cologne
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is heading to Gamescom’s Opening Night Live. Square Enix confirmed on August 6 that the third and final chapter of the FF7 Remake trilogy will receive “a new look” during Geoff Keighley’s annual pre-Gamescom showcase, set for Wednesday, August 25 at 11am PT / 2pm ET / 7pm BST.
What makes this one worth circling on the calendar is the added detail that director Naoki Hamaguchi will be on hand for the segment. As reported by Video Games Chronicle, that suggests the appearance will go beyond a standard trailer drop and may include an on-stage interview and the possibility of further announcements. Square Enix has been gradually turning up the heat on Revelation since the game was formally unveiled, and a live showcase appearance with the director feels like a meaningful step toward pinning down specifics for a title currently eyeing a first half of 2027 launch.
Day-One Everywhere This Time
Revelation arrives in a notably different position from its predecessors. Final Fantasy 7 Remake launched as a timed PlayStation exclusive, and Rebirth followed the same path. Revelation breaks that pattern entirely. Square Enix has confirmed it will release simultaneously on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, giving the conclusion of this years-long project the widest day-one audience in the trilogy’s history.
A firm release date still hasn’t been announced, which makes the Opening Night Live appearance all the more interesting. Hamaguchi showing up personally to present the game, with a 2027 window already on the books, raises the possibility that a more specific date could be part of what Square Enix has in store.
The Story Ends in the Base Game. Probably.
Meanwhile, a small but lively conversation has been building around what happens after the credits roll. Hamaguchi has been clear with fans that the base game will mark the definitive conclusion of the trilogy’s narrative. He told Automaton, “The story will be concluded within the main game. We’re serious about concluding the series with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, and we’re proceeding with development with that goal in mind.”
That reassurance bumped into a wrinkle last month, when dataminers surfaced an Epic Games Store listing that appeared to reference a “Story Expansion Pass” for the title. Hamaguchi has since addressed the tension between his comments and what the leak implied, drawing a careful distinction between an epilogue and a spin-off. “If we were to hypothetically release any DLC, we would likely want to create a kind of spin-off focused on a specific character that depicts their untold stories, kind of like what we did with Yuffie with Final Fantasy 7 Episode Intermission,” he explained. “And I think there is demand for it among fans.”
The emphasis on “hypothetically” is doing some work there, and the existence of that Epic listing doesn’t make the question feel fully settled. Whether Opening Night Live brings any clarity on that front or sticks to showcasing the main game, fans will have their answer soon enough. August 25 is only a few weeks away.
