Amazon Drops Nintendo Switch Sports Resort Physical Preorder to $49.94

A Familiar Island at an Unfamiliar Price

Wuhu Island is back, and so is the slightly awkward reality of Switch 2 physical pricing. Amazon has knocked $10 off preorders of the physical edition of Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, bringing it down to $49.94 from the standard boxed price of $59.99, according to IGN. Walmart is matching the deal. That discounted price lands right at the game’s digital MSRP, which tells you something about the current moment for physical Nintendo releases.

Nintendo has been pricing Switch 2 physical copies at a $10 premium over their digital versions, a policy that has made deals like this one feel more meaningful than a typical preorder discount might. Saving $10 on a Switch 2 box isn’t just a minor convenience. It’s essentially erasing an entire surcharge that exists by default.

The game is set to launch on October 22, 2026.

Physical Media, Still Breathing

The timing of this deal is worth noting. Sony recently announced that no new PlayStation 5 games would ship on disc starting January 2028, a move that drew considerable attention. Nintendo is taking a different path. As reported by IGN, boxed games still account for 38.5% of Nintendo’s software sales, a figure the company has cited as evidence that physical media remains a real part of its business, not a legacy afterthought.

That’s a meaningful contrast. While one platform holder winds down physical releases, Nintendo continues to support boxed games and is, in fact, charging more for them. The Amazon discount here is a small correction to that premium, not a structural change, but for fans who prefer a cartridge on their shelf, it closes the gap.

Back to Wuhu Island

For anyone who spent time with a Wii Remote in hand during the late 2000s, Wuhu Island carries real weight. The tropical setting debuted in Wii Sports Resort, then showed up in Pilotwings Resort, Mario Kart 7, and Super Smash Bros. before going quiet for years. Nintendo Switch Sports Resort brings it back as the main stage for a new collection of activities.

At San Diego Comic Con, IGN’s Logan Plant went hands-on with four of the game’s 12 sports: archery, bowling, power cruising, and thumb wrestling. The early impression, according to IGN, is that Resort could address some of the shortcomings of 2022’s Nintendo Switch Sports, which launched with a smaller lineup and drew criticism for feeling thin at release. The 12-sport slate at launch is a notable step up.

The upgraded Joy-Con 2 controllers are apparently doing real work here. IGN noted that each sport feels more mechanically distinct because of them, from drawing a bow in archery to gripping virtual handlebars during a power cruising race around the island. That tactile differentiation was something the original Switch Sports occasionally struggled with.

Nostalgia is part of the draw, no question. But a larger launch roster and controllers built to better translate physical motion into gameplay suggest there’s more holding Resort together than fond memories of a Mii in a sailor’s uniform.
