The pitch is immediately appealing if you have ever found unexpected peace in games like Unpacking or A Little to the Left. You play as a housekeeper for hire in a town Zhicheng describes as full of hidden magic. The work sounds ordinary on the surface. It is not.

“I wanted you to discover the residents’ true feelings simply by interacting with their private spaces,” Zhicheng wrote on Xbox Wire. The result is described as a puzzle-like emotional narrative assembled entirely from environmental clues, the unspoken regrets and wishes of a town that does not announce itself.

That framing is doing some real work. There is a meaningful difference between a game that tells you a character is sad and a game that asks you to handle their belongings and lets you figure it out yourself. Whisper of the House is clearly aiming for the latter.
