Voice of Cyclops Ray Chase has 1,000 hours in Slay the Spire and a 'smell build' in KC:D2
Ray Chase, who voiced Cyclops in X-Men '97, talked about his deep PC gaming habits, including a very fragrant approach to Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.

Ray Chase is best known right now as the voice of Cyclops in the beloved animated revival X-Men ‘97. Off the microphone, though, he turns out to be a dedicated PC gamer with a card game habit that has consumed a genuinely alarming chunk of his life. According to a report by PC Gamer, Chase has logged ‘1,000 freaking hours’ in Slay the Spire, the roguelike deckbuilder from MegaCrit that has been quietly devouring free time since its 2019 full release.
A thousand hours is not a casual relationship with a video game. That is a part-time job. That is a second career. For context, it is roughly equivalent to watching every episode of The Simpsons twice. Chase’s phrasing, that emphatic ‘freaking,’ suggests he is at least partially aware of how that number sounds out loud.
Slay the Spire has long had a reputation for this kind of gravitational pull. Its loop of drafting cards, building synergies, and climbing increasingly punishing floors rewards mastery in ways that keep players coming back long after any reasonable person would consider the game fully explored. For Chase, apparently, the floor has not arrived yet.
The Fancy Boy Enters the Battlefield
Chase is also deep into Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, the historical RPG from Warhorse Studios, and his approach there is a little harder to explain with a straight face. As reported by PC Gamer, he is running what he calls a ‘smell build.’ His words: ‘I wear perfumes and walk into battle with my fancy boy outfit.’
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 features a reputation and social system detailed enough that how you smell and how you dress actually carries mechanical weight. Chase appears to be leaning into that with full commitment, prioritizing charisma and presentation over the kind of sensible armor choices that keep a medieval soldier alive. It is a valid playstyle. Unconventional, certainly. Fragrant, definitely.
There is something charming about the contrast here. On one hand, Chase is grinding high-ascension runs in one of the most mechanically demanding roguelikes around, chasing optimal synergies through hundreds of attempts. On the other hand, he is wandering into combat in Kingdom Come wearing his best cologne and presumably hoping his enemies are impressed enough to go easy on him.
Why This Kind of Player Profile Matters
Voice actors talking openly about their gaming habits is genuinely useful for the industry, and not just as a curiosity. Chase’s dual obsessions point at two very different things PC gaming does well right now. Slay the Spire represents the kind of infinitely replayable, mechanically rich experience that rewards obsession. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 represents something else entirely, a simulation so detailed that players can build around systems as niche as personal hygiene and wardrobe choices.
The fact that a working actor with a busy schedule has found 1,000 hours for one game and is already committed enough to Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 to develop a signature playstyle says something about both titles. Neither of them is the kind of game that lets you go halfway.
Chase’s smell build, absurd as it sounds, is actually a reasonable expression of what makes Warhorse’s sequel interesting. The game lets you decide what kind of Henry you want to be. Chase’s Henry, apparently, is a man who smells wonderful and dresses well and absolutely refuses to let practicality get in the way of a good outfit.
