Lord of the Rings: War in the North Shadow-Drops on Both Switch Models

A 2011 Relic Returns, Unannounced

Aspyr has a habit of dusting off games people forgot existed, and on August 12 the studio did exactly that again. The Lord of the Rings: War in the North Legacy Edition shadow-dropped on both Nintendo Switch 1 and Switch 2 without so much as a prior announcement, according to Nintendo Life. The price is $19.99.

The original game launched in 2011 and told an original Middle-earth story running parallel to the events of the main trilogy. It starred three playable heroes: Eradan, a stealthy Dunadan Ranger; Andriel, an Elven Loremaster; and Farin, a tank-like Dwarven Champion. Familiar faces like Aragorn, Gandalf, and Elrond make appearances along the way, and the adventure moves through locations including Rivendell, Lorien, and Mirkwood.

Critics at the time were not exactly blown away. The game averaged a 61 on Metacritic for Xbox 360, with reviewers pointing to linear gameplay and repetitive combat. Nintendo Life noted it is “probably not great” by modern standards, but acknowledged it could still be a fun ride for dedicated fans of the franchise.

What the Legacy Edition Actually Adds

This is not a straight port. Aspyr has packed in several quality-of-life upgrades that bring the experience closer to what players expect from a 2026 release.

The big additions include 60fps gameplay, an auto-save system with additional save slots, and a new character hot-swapping feature that lets you switch between heroes on the fly while also managing equipment, skills, and abilities for your computer-controlled companions. That last one is genuinely new to this edition and addresses one of the more frustrating limitations of the original.

Other modernizations include visible health, mana, and experience bars, a lock-on targeting system, a “Triggering Secrets” mechanic that lets you see other characters’ hidden supply caches regardless of who you are playing as, and gyro and motion sensor support on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. UI and UX optimizations round out the package.

Co-op supports up to three players online or two in local split-screen. The great eagle Beleram also returns, available to call down mid-battle to tip the scales against tougher enemies.

A Few Catches to Know Before You Buy

There are some platform-specific limitations worth knowing. Local co-op is not available on Switch 1, and 60fps is similarly absent on the older hardware, according to Nintendo Life’s reporting on the feature list. If those two things matter to you, Switch 2 is the version to get.

European players on Switch 2 will also need to wait a little longer. Aspyr has confirmed that the EU eShop release for Switch 2 is scheduled for August 18, roughly a week after the surprise launch elsewhere.

For players who have never touched this one, War in the North occupies an interesting niche. It is one of the darker licensed Lord of the Rings games, leaning into brutal combat and a grimmer tone than the films sometimes allowed. The story involves battling the sorcerer Agandaur and his forces across the northern reaches of Middle-earth, territory the films largely skipped. Whether the Legacy Edition additions are enough to smooth over the combat repetition the original was criticized for is a question Nintendo Life said it hopes to answer with a review in the coming days.

At twenty bucks, the barrier to finding out for yourself is at least pretty low.
