From Ghosts to a Publishing Label

You probably know Kinetic Games from Phasmophobia, the co-op ghost hunting horror that has sold over 27 million copies. That success gave the studio something most indie developers only dream about: leverage. In January of this year, Kinetic used it to launch Kinetic Publishing, a dedicated label aimed at giving other small developers the kind of support that founder Daniel Knight wished he had when he was first building Phasmophobia from scratch.

On August 12, the label held its debut showcase and announced the first five games it will be publishing across 2027 and 2028, all of them heading to PlayStation 5. Asim Tanvir, Director of Marketing and Partnerships at Kinetic Publishing, shared details on the PlayStation Blog, describing the lineup as a curated mix of “unique, inspiring” teams and equally varied projects. Sci-fi horror sits alongside gossip-fueled motorbroom adventures. The range is real.

The Games Themselves

Contact Protocol is probably the sharpest pitch in the bunch. Set aboard a starship called the Pale Horse on a voyage to Jupiter’s largest moon, it puts players in the deeply unglamorous role of a corporate admin officer who must assess incoming ships and determine whether they are friend or foe. Get it wrong and the safeguard is a torpedo, which saves you while sending the other crew into the vacuum of space. As described on the PlayStation Blog, the game gradually ramps up players’ cognitive load while mixing in stretches of downtime between the high-stakes calls. Kinetic calls the combination of stressful decision-making and an unsettling art style “something really special.” Contact Protocol is slated for Spring 2027.

Crescent County takes a hard left turn in tone. Creative director and illustrator Anna Hollinrake built the game around her own experience relocating to the Isle of Wight, and the result is a painterly, sunset-soaked world on a magical crescent isle. The gameplay involves motorbroom driving described as having a “crunchy, flow-state” feel, local gossip, drama, and flirty relationships. Kinetic describes it as Kiki’s Delivery Service meeting the bikes of Akira on a rural, witch-tech island. That is a specific reference set and it tells you exactly what kind of vibe Hollinrake is going for.

The showcase also revealed Shellbound, Aether Wizard Life, and Precognition, rounding out the full slate of five titles, all confirmed for PS5.

What This Means for Indie Publishing

Kinetic Publishing entering the space is worth watching for a few reasons. The label comes from a studio that built a massive audience with a single game, largely through word of mouth and streaming culture, so the team understands how indie games actually find players in the current market. That kind of institutional knowledge, when passed on to smaller developers, can matter as much as a marketing budget.

The games announced so far cover a wide tonal range, which suggests Kinetic is not trying to replicate Phasmophobia’s horror formula across its entire catalog. Contact Protocol has that tense, morally loaded edge, but Crescent County sounds like something you play on a Sunday afternoon with a cup of tea. That breadth is a reasonable strategy for a new label trying to establish an identity that is not just “the Phasmophobia people.”

With releases spread across 2027 and 2028, players have some time to wait. But for indie fans keeping an eye on what comes to PS5 from smaller studios, the Kinetic Publishing lineup is now officially one to track.
