Eight Years of Dinos, Done on Official Servers

Studio Wildcard has announced that official server support for ARK: Survival Evolved on Nintendo Switch will end on August 31, 2026. The closure covers both the original Switch release, which launched back in 2018, and ARK: Ultimate Survivor Edition, a rebuilt Switch remaster developed by Grove Street Games that arrived in 2022. The studio shared the news in a community update posted to the game’s message boards, as reported by Nintendo Life.

The announcement carries a genuinely warm send-off tone. “It is with wistful hearts that today we are announcing the Official Servers for ARK: Survival Evolved and ARK: Ultimate Survivor Edition on Nintendo Switch will sunset on August 31st, 2026,” the studio wrote. “Over a million players have explored these servers since the original ARK Switch release in 2018 and the launch of Grove Street Games’ rebuilt Switch remaster in 2022. We want to thank everyone who has been a part of this journey.”

A million players across eight years is a notable figure for a version of the game that, to put it charitably, had a rough critical reception. Nintendo Life’s own review of the original Switch port described it as “an ambitious survival epic that’s borderline unplayable on Switch.” That the servers still attracted that kind of playerbase in spite of the technical struggles says something about how hungry Switch owners were for a big survival experience on the platform.

Single-Player and Unofficial Servers Carry On

The good news for remaining fans is that the shutdown is surgical rather than total. Studio Wildcard confirmed that unofficial servers and single-player modes will continue to remain fully playable after August 31. That means solo players and communities running their own servers can keep taming raptors and building bases without interruption.

It is worth pointing out that not every studio handles these moments gracefully. Wildcard is giving players roughly two weeks of advance notice, keeping the game itself alive in offline and community-run forms, and framing the closure with some genuine appreciation rather than a sterile legal notice. A commenter on the Nintendo Life article called it a strong example of how to properly sunset a game, citing the advance warning, the preservation of offline play, and the allowance of custom servers as the right moves.

A Long Run for a Bumpy Port

ARK: Survival Evolved originally launched on PC back in 2017 after a lengthy early access period. The Switch version arrived in 2018, developed by Abstraction Games, and was met with mixed reviews largely centered on performance issues. Grove Street Games, a studio perhaps best known for its work on the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy remaster, took another crack at it with the Ultimate Survivor Edition in 2022, positioning it as a rebuilt version for the hardware.

Whether either version ever fully delivered on the promise of a portable dinosaur survival sandbox is debatable. But the playerbase clearly showed up. A million accounts logging onto official servers over that span represents real investment from real people who found something worth their time in those worlds, performance warts and all.

For anyone still playing, the window before August 31 is a chance to wrap up anything left undone on official servers before migrating to single-player or finding an unofficial community server to settle into.
