Modern Warfare 4 Beta Will Include a Campaign Mission and Warzone Content

A Beta Unlike Any Other in the Series

Call of Duty betas have historically been a fairly predictable affair. You jump in, you grind a handful of multiplayer maps, you complain about the time-to-kill on the forums, and then you wait for launch. Modern Warfare 4 is apparently done with that routine.

According to PC Gamer, the Modern Warfare 4 beta will include a campaign mission, which is a first for the entire Call of Duty franchise. On top of that, the beta will also feature Warzone content, making it one of the most expansive pre-release access windows the series has ever offered.

That is a meaningful shift. Call of Duty campaigns have traditionally been kept under wraps until launch day, treated almost like a luxury reveal saved for the people who already bought the game. Opening even a slice of that to beta participants signals that Activision and the development team are leaning on the campaign as a selling point this time around, not just something players might get to after a hundred hours of multiplayer.

What This Means for Players

For longtime fans of the series, this is a fairly big deal. The campaign side of Call of Duty has had a complicated few years in terms of how much attention it gets versus the live service components. Warzone has dominated the conversation for a while now, and the annual multiplayer modes are what most players talk about at launch. Putting a campaign mission directly in the beta is essentially Activision saying: this part of the game is worth your time before you even pay for it.

The inclusion of Warzone content in the same beta makes sense from a structural standpoint. Warzone has its own dedicated player base that may or may not be planning to pick up Modern Warfare 4 outright. Giving those players something to engage with during the beta period keeps them in the ecosystem and potentially converts some of them into full game buyers.

Together, the two additions turn what would have been a standard multiplayer preview into something closer to a sampler of the entire Modern Warfare 4 package.

Why the Timing Matters

The competitive environment for big-budget shooters has gotten considerably more crowded. Marathon is on the horizon, Arc Raiders has been building momentum, and Battlefield 6 is generating real anticipation. Call of Duty remains one of the biggest franchises in the business, but the expectation that players will simply show up out of habit is a shakier assumption than it used to be.

Offering a campaign mission in the beta is a confident move. It suggests the team believes what they have built in the single-player space is strong enough to generate excitement on its own merits, and that showing it early will drive purchases rather than reduce them.

Whether it becomes a new standard for how Call of Duty releases are handled, or remains a one-time experiment for Modern Warfare 4, will probably depend on how players respond to having that campaign taste before launch day arrives.
