HLTV's 2025 Women's Player of the Year ASTRA moves to VALORANT

A Champion Without a Stage

Mayline-Joy “ASTRA” Champliaud was, by most measures, the best female Counter-Strike player in the world heading into 2026. HLTV named her Women’s Player of the Year for 2025. She led BIG EQUIPA to the ESL Impact League Season 8 title. Her team picked up Women’s Team of the Year honors alongside her individual award. Then the circuit that gave her those opportunities quietly disappeared, and now she is too, at least from CS2.

ASTRA announced her transition to VALORANT on August 8, as reported by HLTV. The 25-year-old French rifler was direct about the reasoning: “female CS falling apart and the lack of tournaments coming up.” She is not wrong. The ESL Impact circuit, the primary competitive home for women’s CS2 in Europe, was put on hold at the end of 2025. What followed was a cascade of roster disbandments. BIG EQUIPA paused its female project in May 2026, leaving ASTRA without a team and, more to the point, without meaningful competition to chase.

Her Words, Her Call

ASTRA made clear on X that this was a considered decision, not a reluctant one. “I find myself missing practice and competition,” she wrote. “Therefore, I made the decision to transition to Valorant and to put my focus into a growing scene.”

She was careful to frame her ambitions as unchanged. “My goals are the same as in CS, I only want to compete for the top.” She acknowledged the difficulty of the choice while landing on something that sounds less like a retreat and more like a redirection. “I’m in a happy place, I’m very passionate and committed to what I set out to do and this is a challenge that I would love to take on.”

Those are the words of someone who still wants to compete at a high level and found that the infrastructure to do that in CS2 had largely been dismantled around her.

The Broader Problem

ASTRA’s departure is a signal worth reading carefully. She finished 2025 as the best female CS2 player on the planet, with a 1.10 rating across 265 maps according to HLTV stats. That is not someone who faded out or ran out of ability. That is someone who ran out of places to play.

The ESL Impact circuit was the most consistent competitive structure for women’s CS2 in recent years. When it went on hold, there was no obvious replacement. Organizations that had invested in female rosters cut their losses quickly once the tournament calendar dried up. BIG EQUIPA was among them. The cycle is a familiar and discouraging one: a player reaches peak form, the structural support collapses, and the talent finds somewhere else to go.

VALORANT’s female and mixed-gender scenes have historically offered more consistent tournament opportunities, which is part of what makes the destination sensible from ASTRA’s perspective. She is not the first high-profile female CS player to make this kind of move, and given the current state of women’s Counter-Strike infrastructure, she is unlikely to be the last.

For now, the player who won every meaningful award women’s CS had to offer in 2025 is starting over somewhere new, looking for the competition that her own game stopped providing.
