A Chinese Staple Steps onto the World Stage

For more than a decade, the Demacia Cup has been a fixture of the Chinese League of Legends calendar, a domestic tournament that kept LPL teams sharp during the offseason. That chapter is now closing. TJ Sports and Huya have announced the 2026 Demacia Cup Global Invitational, bringing in 12 teams from six major regions for the first time in the event’s history, according to reporting by Dot Esports.

The tournament runs October 3 through 17. Six regions are represented: the LPL and LCK each land three spots, the LEC and LCS receive two apiece, and the LCP and CBLOL get one slot each. That distribution is not arbitrary. As reported by Dot Esports, it mirrors how those regions finished at MSI 2026, with the top two earning three invitations, the third and fourth receiving two, and the rest getting one.

There is one firm condition attached to every invitation: the team must have missed out on the 2026 World Championship. The LPL and LCK slots go to their highest-ranked eligible teams finishing fifth through seventh. The LEC and LCS take their fourth and fifth-place finishers. The LCP invitation is determined by Championship Points, the CBLOL sends its fourth-place team due to scheduling differences in South America, and if any invited team declines, the next eligible team steps in. The full 12-team field will not be confirmed until more regional seasons and Worlds qualification races wrap up.

How the Tournament Is Structured

The format splits neatly into two phases. From October 3 to 8, all 12 teams enter an online Swiss stage. Opening matchups are drawn randomly, with the only restriction being that teams from the same region cannot face each other in round one. Round one matches are best-of-ones, and subsequent rounds become best-of-threes. Eight teams advance.

Those eight then travel to the JDG home venue in Beijing for a single-elimination offline bracket from October 12 to 17. Quarterfinals take place October 12 and 13, semifinals run October 14 and 15, and the grand final closes things out on October 17. Every knockout match is a best-of-five.

Coach Comms is also making a return for the offline portion. The system lets a coach speak directly to players up to three times per game, each window lasting 45 seconds and running without pausing the match. The Demacia Cup first tried the feature during its 2025 playoffs, with the LCK Cup and LCP running similar trials earlier in 2026.

More Money, More Teams, More Regions

The 2025 Demacia Cup featured 16 LPL teams and ended with Invictus Gaming sweeping JD Gaming 3-0 in the final, splitting a ¥1.2 million prize pool among the top four. The 2026 edition raises that to ¥1.5 million, roughly $223,000. The champion collects ¥600,000, the runner-up takes ¥400,000, each semifinalist earns ¥175,000, and quarterfinalists receive ¥37,500.

Opening this tournament to international competition during the post-Worlds window is a notable shift. Historically, teams outside the LPL had no reason to follow the Demacia Cup at all. Now, squads from Korea, Europe, North America, the Pacific, and Brazil will be competing on a stage that doubles as a meaningful send-off to the competitive year. For rosters that just barely missed Worlds, it offers something worth playing for before the offseason fully takes over.
