FURIA rally from repeated deficits to reach EWC quarter-finals

Two Teams, Three Maps, Zero Chill

FURIA have a habit of making things difficult for themselves before making things look easy. At the Esports World Cup 2026, the Brazilian-majority squad beat Aurora 2-1 on August 19, but the scoreline flatters how calm it felt. According to HLTV, the match featured FURIA clawing back from big holes on two separate maps, surviving Aurora map points, and needing a last-second defuse from Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo to force overtime on Nuke. Heartbreaking is probably the right word if you were rooting for Aurora.

Ancient: The First Comeback

Aurora opened on their map pick and made it count early. A quad-kill pistol round from Ali “Wicadia” Yalcin put them up 3-0, and while FURIA answered with a couple of rounds, one of them coming via a Danil “molodoy” Golubenko 1v1 AWP clutch, Aurora still held an 8-4 lead at the half.

Then FURIA won the second pistol round and strung together six consecutive rounds to flip the map entirely, going up 10-6. Aurora steadied themselves enough to tie it at 11-11, but FalleN’s squad took the final two rounds without needing overtime. Map to FURIA, 13-11.

Nuke: Aurora’s Best Shot

Nuke was Aurora’s story, mostly. They jumped to another 3-0 start on the CT side, and even though Kaike “KSCERATO” Cerato pulled off an impressive 1v3 clutch to keep FURIA alive, Aurora carried a slim lead into the half at 8-7.

The second half kept delivering. FURIA won a key retake at 8-8, Aurora responded with a fast B play to retie it, and the map stayed knotted deep into regulation. Aurora reached map point at 12-9 in overtime territory, and looked set to take it. Then FalleN defused the bomb in the final second of regulation to force OT.

Overtime was its own drama. Mareks “YEKINDAR” Galinskis posted a triple entry on A, molodoy doubled up, and FURIA tied it at 14-14. Aurora hit map point again. Ismailcan “XANTARES” Dortkardesh locked Outside with a triple kill to force the decider. Aurora took Nuke 16-14, as reported by HLTV.

Mirage: A 10-Round Hammer

If Ancient was a comeback and Nuke was a heartbreaker, Mirage was something close to historic for FURIA fans. Jimi “Jimpphat” Salo sealed a 1v2 clutch in the last round of the first half to give Aurora a 9-3 lead at the break. That is a gap that buries most teams.

FURIA won the pistol round on the CT side and never looked back. Round by round, according to HLTV’s reporting, Aurora either ran into a wall or lost after-plant situations they should have converted. FURIA won 10 rounds straight to finish the map 13-9 and send Aurora home.

Molodoy was the engine of the Mirage run specifically, racking up 18 kills and 149 ADR on the CT side. Across the full series he finished 64-45 with a 1.25 rating. KSCERATO led the series with a 1.26 rating and a 64-50 kill differential. FalleN contributed with a 1.13 rating and those two nerves-of-steel clutch moments that kept the series alive. YEKINDAR had a rougher series at 0.82, but his triple entry in Nuke overtime kept FURIA’s chances breathing.

FURIA advance to the EWC quarter-finals in the single-elimination bracket. Aurora, who came so close on multiple occasions, exit with the kind of series that will be replayed in their heads for a while. For FURIA, the next test comes with the bracket already thinned out, and no margin to spot opponents a 3-9 lead and expect the same escape route to be there.
