A Creator’s Announcement Shook His Own Community

On August 1, YouTube animator Max Gilardi, who posts under the name hotdiggedydemon, announced that he intended to pursue an assisted death in Switzerland. Gilardi, who has more than 2.1 million subscribers and is known for animated projects including PONY.MOV, Jerry, and Brain Dump, cited years of deteriorating health and financial hardship. He was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2024 and has described living with chronic pain, fatigue, cognitive difficulties, and an unexplained condition that causes excessive saliva and mucus production.

At the time of the announcement, Gilardi had not submitted an application or set a date. But the response from fans, friends, and people close to him arrived fast and hard.

Forty-Eight Hours That Shifted Everything

One day after his August 1 post, Gilardi wrote on X that he was “not thinking clearly” and would reassess the decision. Then, during a follow-up livestream, he confirmed that he had reversed course entirely, according to reporting by Dexerto.

He said he had originally believed that if he explained his reasoning carefully, his audience might accept his decision even while finding it painful. That assumption turned out to be wrong. “You guys have sort of snapped me back to reality with that reaction,” Gilardi said during the stream. “Now I think I better understand the size of the deal that I thought was not a big deal.”

Gilardi described the aftermath of the announcement as emotionally overwhelming. He said he began experiencing guilt and shame as he saw how many people were genuinely hurt. Among the responses was a tearful voice message from a friend. His brother-in-law sent police to his home. The accumulation of those moments, he suggested, reframed something he had been processing largely in isolation.

Gilardi’s situation is unusual in specifics but not entirely unfamiliar in shape.
