Ubisoft Has Two Far Cry Games in Development, Report Says

Two Projects, One Franchise Trying to Find Its Footing

Far Cry has been quiet for a while now. Depending on how generous you are with DLC releases and GOTY editions, it has been somewhere between four and five years since the last proper entry in Ubisoft’s long-running open-world series. That silence may be about to get a lot louder, though. According to a report from Insider Gaming, Ubisoft now has not one but two Far Cry projects in active development.

The first of the two, codenamed Blackbird, has been previously reported as the next mainline Far Cry title and is already known to be in the pipeline. The second is newer news. A project codenamed Kodiak has officially entered development at Ubisoft’s Vantage Studios after clearing its conception stage, according to the Insider Gaming report.

What Kodiak Actually Is

Details are thin, which is about what you would expect from a game that just passed its earliest internal hurdle. What Insider Gaming’s sources did share is that Kodiak is being developed as an open-world first-person shooter where, in their words, “player interactions and player-driven stories take center stage.” Internally, the project has reportedly been described as “really ambitious,” which is the kind of phrase that can mean anything from genuinely boundary-pushing to simply expensive.

The report also notes that Kodiak is being built on foundations laid by Project Maverick, a standalone multiplayer extraction shooter that Ubisoft cancelled earlier this year. Maverick had been widely reported before its cancellation, so repurposing its groundwork rather than starting from scratch makes a certain kind of practical sense for a studio that has had a bruising few years financially.

Kodiak is still several years from release by all accounts, meaning players should not expect any kind of formal reveal soon. For now it exists in that familiar pre-announcement purgatory where a game is real enough to leak but too early to talk about officially.

Blackbird Still Comes First

Based on everything reported so far, Blackbird remains the closer of the two projects and is expected to be the Far Cry game that actually ships first. Beyond that, the specifics of Blackbird’s setting, tone, or timeline have not been confirmed publicly by Ubisoft.

What the dual-project news does suggest is that Ubisoft is genuinely committed to keeping Far Cry alive as a franchise rather than letting it drift into indefinite hibernation. The series has sold well over its lifetime and occupies a specific niche, big action-forward open worlds with a pulpy antagonist at the center, that does not have an obvious replacement on Ubisoft’s slate.

A Franchise Rebuilding With Some Patience Required

The Kodiak situation is an interesting one for fans who have been waiting. The game is ambitious by internal description, grounded in player-driven storytelling, and built on work that already exists from Maverick’s development. That combination could add up to something genuinely different for Far Cry, a series that critics have occasionally accused of running the same playbook too many times.

But several years away is several years away. Blackbird will have to carry the weight of reigniting interest in the franchise first. If it does that well, Kodiak arrives with momentum. If it stumbles, Ubisoft will be asking players to trust the brand twice in relatively quick succession.

For now, Far Cry fans have confirmation that the series is not sitting still, even if the next time they actually get to play something new in it remains an open question.
