Rockstar Furious Over GTA 6 Leaks, Netflix Premiere Stays Aug. 27

Leaks Hit Hard, But the Calendar Holds

Rockstar Games is angry. According to Bloomberg, the latest round of GTA 6 leaks has rattled company leadership and left employees frustrated, many of whom have spent years building what is arguably the most anticipated game in a generation. One of the game’s top executives sent an email to staff condemning the leak and reassuring them that the unauthorized footage would not overshadow their work.

And yet, none of that anger is changing the plan. As reported by Dexerto, Rockstar is sticking with its original marketing schedule. “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look” will premiere on Netflix on August 27, with the footage rolling out to Rockstar’s YouTube channel and website six hours after that. A leak campaign does not get to pick the premiere date. Rockstar does.

What Actually Got Out

The leaks started appearing on August 18 and covered a surprising amount of ground. Footage reportedly shows protagonist Jason playing basketball, driving around, brawling with NPCs, and stealing vehicles, the kind of broad-strokes GTA activity that fans have been imagining for years. Beyond the basics, though, the community has been dissecting some specific mechanical details.

According to Dexerto, the leaked material appears to show a revamped Wanted system, fuel mechanics, improved combat, and some form of item storage. Images claiming to reveal the entire Leonida map also surfaced, along with a cutscene and clips of the in-game radio. In one piece of footage, the leaker apparently fires a gun to spell the word “Leek” into a wall, a bit of showboating that confirms they have access to an actual build of the game rather than just screenshots or documents.

One detail that caught attention: a song called “Sports Car” by Tate McRae appears on the in-game radio. That track was only released in 2025, which suggests the build in circulation is reasonably current. That makes the whole situation a bit more uncomfortable for Rockstar, since footage that looks close to finished tends to sting more than an early prototype.

It is worth keeping in mind, as Dexerto points out, that development on GTA 6 is not yet complete. Whatever footage is bouncing around online may not reflect what players actually receive at launch. Animations get polished. Systems change. A build from several months ago, however recent, is not the same as a gold master.

The leaker is operating under the name Cyberleek, which Dexerto describes as an anonymous campaign with a somewhat tangled set of motivations. Alongside the game footage, Cyberleak has been promoting a Solana memecoin and framing the leaks as a protest against digital preorders and other practices the group considers anti-consumer. The Stop Killing Games campaign, notably, publicly condemned the leaker after Cyberleek’s manifesto claimed their support, making clear they wanted no association with it.

The Netflix Window Still Matters

For all the noise, the August 27 Netflix premiere is still the main event. Extended looks at major releases have become their own kind of cultural moment, and Rockstar choosing Netflix as the first window says something about where gaming and streaming audiences overlap right now. Six hours later, the footage hits YouTube and Rockstar’s own site, giving everyone a chance to watch it on their own terms.

The irony is that the leaks may actually raise the stakes for that premiere. After days of grainy, context-free footage, a proper, studio-produced look at GTA 6 on a major streaming platform will hit differently. Rockstar knows that. That is probably a significant part of why the date never moved.
