Rockstar Calls GTA 6 Gameplay Leaks 'Heartbreaking' Ahead of Netflix Reveal

CyberLeek has been posting gameplay clips online since August 18, just days before Rockstar's planned extended look at GTA 6 on Netflix. The studio responded on August 26 with an apology and a plea for patience.

A Week of Leaks Before the Big Reveal

The timing could not have been worse. Starting on August 18, a leaker going by CyberLeek began releasing gameplay footage from Grand Theft Auto 6 online, about a week before Rockstar Games had scheduled an extended look at the game through Netflix. According to reporting by Dexerto, the material that surfaced includes combat, driving, minigames, a look at the Vice City map, and what appear to be radio stations from inside the game.

That is already a lot. But CyberLeek did not stop there. The leaker apparently posted a cut screen relating to characters evading police, and, in what reads as a direct taunt aimed at the studio, shot their own username into a wall using an in-game assault rifle. It is the kind of thing designed to get under a developer’s skin, and by Rockstar’s own account, it did.

Rockstar and Take-Two Break Their Silence

On August 26, the same day as this article’s publication, Rockstar Games and parent company Take-Two responded publicly. Their statement, posted to the official Rockstar social account, described the situation as heartbreaking and included an apology for not addressing it sooner.

“We are very excited for everyone to see the extended look tomorrow,” the statement reads, as reported by Dexerto. “It has taken longer than we wanted to get it ready, but as with everything we do, we know we need to exceed your expectations, and we are determined to deliver at the level you expect and deserve.”

The studio also acknowledged the damage done to the intended reveal experience. “While it is unfortunate that the intended game experience may now be impacted by some spoilers, we hope that everyone will wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves on November 19.”

That November 19 date stands as the release window mentioned in the statement, giving fans a concrete anchor amid weeks of chaotic, unsanctioned reveals.

This Has Happened Before

For anyone who was paying attention back in 2022, there is a grim familiarity to all of this. An 18-year-old hacker named Arion Kurtaj leaked clips of GTA 6 protagonists Jason and Lucia during that earlier incident, showing off store robberies and NPC interactions from what was clearly an early build. In late 2023, Kurtaj was sentenced to indefinite detention in a hospital prison, to remain there until authorities determine he is no longer a threat.

According to Dexerto’s reporting, Kurtaj reportedly resurfaced in 2026, using a burner phone from inside prison to share additional game details on Snapchat. The persistence of the problem, years after the original breach, underlines how difficult it has been for Rockstar to contain information about arguably the most anticipated game in its history.

CyberLeek, meanwhile, has reportedly continued to promise further story spoilers to supporters, with Rockstar described as furious at the ongoing situation.

What Fans Are Left With

With the Netflix extended look now set to arrive the day after Rockstar’s statement, the studio finds itself in the unusual position of trying to reclaim its own narrative about a game it has spent years carefully protecting. The leaks have already seeded the internet with footage that was never meant to be public, and no amount of corporate messaging fully unrings that bell.

What Rockstar can control is the November 19 release itself. For players willing to hold out, that date is the only version of GTA 6 the developers actually sanctioned, complete and finished, without someone’s username written on the wall in bullet holes.
