Pokemon Bank Closes Feb 2027, Taking Exclusive Forms and Shinies With It

When Pokemon Bank shuts down on February 25, 2027, it will sever the last official route from dozens of older games into the current ecosystem, locking away certain Pokemon forever.

The Last Bridge Is Closing

On February 25, 2027 at 7 PM PT, The Pokemon Company will shut down Pokemon Bank and end Bank-to-HOME transfers for good. That date, confirmed by The Pokemon Company’s official Japanese Twitter account on August 13, 2026 and covered by Dexerto, marks the end of the only official route connecting decades of older hardware to the current Pokemon ecosystem.

Games cut off from that point forward include the 3DS Virtual Console releases, Game Boy Advance titles, GameCube games, Nintendo DS games, and native 3DS entries. Any Pokemon sitting in those games at the time of shutdown stays there, permanently.

Pokemon already inside HOME are safe. They can still be held, traded, and moved to compatible titles. But nothing new comes through from those older games after the deadline.

Three Different Kinds of Loss

Not every affected Pokemon represents the same kind of problem, and Dexerto’s breakdown makes that distinction clearly.

The most severe category is what the article calls a hard loss. These are Pokemon, forms, or records where no new legitimate specimen can reach HOME through any announced route after the shutdown. Spinda is one example. Battle Bond Greninja is another. Poke Ball Pattern Vivillon rounds out the clearest cases. For collectors, these become true dead ends.

A second category is finite supply. The species or item still exists inside HOME and can be traded around, but once the bank closes, no fresh copies can be moved from their source games. Over time, as accounts go inactive or Pokemon get released, the pool shrinks. Old Ribbons, event Pokemon with specific origin records, and certain Legendary specimens all fall here.

The third category, provenance loss, is the subtlest. The species might remain catchable in a modern game, but the exact game of origin, original trainer name, specific Poke Ball, move history, or Ribbon journey attached to an older copy cannot be reconstructed. For competitive players and collectors who care about that full history, those details matter more than the Pokemon itself.

What Actually Disappears

According to Dexerto’s reporting, the shutdown affects a substantial range of content across several categories: specific Shiny Pokemon locked behind Bank-only source games, Shiny HOME Pokedex entries that will become impossible to complete, Ribbons and titles earned through older in-game events, Legendary and Mythical Pokemon tied to distribution methods that no longer exist, origin marks tied to specific games, and certain moves, abilities, and Poke Ball combinations that cannot be replicated in current titles.

Pokemon HOME challenges tied to transferring Bank-compatible species will also be affected, as the pool of eligible Pokemon to complete those challenges shrinks with the closure.

Dexerto notes that the list reflects announced games and compatibility as of August 14, 2026, and that a future game, event, or HOME update could restore access to some affected species or forms. That caveat is worth keeping in mind, but it is not a guarantee.

The Clock Is Running

Players have until February 25, 2027 to move anything they want to preserve. That is roughly six months from the announcement. For people who still have Pokemon sitting in games like Pokemon Black, HeartGold, or the Virtual Console releases of Red and Blue, the window to act is real and specific.

The shutdown does not erase what already exists in HOME, but it closes the door on everything that doesn’t make it through in time. For certain Ribbons, certain Shinies, and certain pieces of Pokemon history tied to hardware that stopped being sold a decade ago, February 25 is the actual deadline. After that, those records belong entirely to whoever already has them.

FAQ
When does Pokemon Bank shut down?

According to Dexerto, The Pokemon Company will end Pokemon Bank and Bank-to-HOME transfers on February 25, 2027 at 7 PM PT / 10 PM ET.

What kinds of loss does the shutdown cause?

Dexerto identifies three categories: hard loss, where no new legitimate specimen can reach HOME through any announced route; finite supply, where existing copies survive but no new ones can be moved; and provenance loss, where a species remains available but its original game, OT, ball, move history or Ribbon journey can no longer be recreated.

Which Pokemon are examples of a hard loss after Bank closes?

According to Dexerto, Spinda, Battle Bond Greninja, and Poke Ball Pattern Vivillon are among the clearest examples of hard losses after the shutdown.
