MW4 Beta Broke Captain Price's Hair and the Internet Had Jokes

A low-graphics bug turned the iconic Task Force 141 leader into a scraggly stranger during the Modern Warfare 4 beta, and the community named him accordingly.

Price Pays the Price

Captain Price has survived dozens of impossibly dangerous missions across multiple timelines, faced down nuclear threats, and endured more near-death experiences than any one mustache should have to bear. He was not, however, prepared for the Modern Warfare 4 beta’s lowest graphics setting.

Since the MW4 beta launched on August 21, players have been running into the kind of bug that is genuinely hard to plan for. When viewing the iconic Task Force 141 leader at the game’s minimum level of detail, Price’s hair renders as thin and wispy, his beard falls apart, and the whole thing ends up looking less like a hardened SAS veteran and more like someone’s uncle who forgot to comb before a Zoom call. Screenshots spread quickly, and by August 23 the jokes were already flying.

“Captain Price: Bravo 6 requesting my sh*t f**ked up over,” read one widely shared post, according to reporting by Dexerto. The reply threads were their own ecosystem. “That ain’t Captain Price, that’s Lieutenant Cost,” offered one player. “That ain’t Price, that’s Amount,” said another. The community kept escalating: “Sergeant Discounts” and “Private Bill” both made appearances, and it is honestly impressive how many rank-based budget puns people managed to generate in under 48 hours.

The Devs Step In

To be clear, Price is not supposed to look like that. The bug affects only the lowest detail tier, and the developers moved fairly quickly to acknowledge it. The official CallofDutyCM account on X posted a response on August 24, stating, “We’re aware of an issue with Price’s hair not appearing correctly when viewed at the lowest level of detail. The team will be addressing it in a future update,” as reported by Dexerto.

The account added, “Ultimately this will not be an issue if players meet our recommended specs,” which is a reasonable technical note that will absolutely not stop anyone from continuing to post screenshots of Sergeant Discounts.

The issue has since been added to Infinity Ward’s public Trello board of known bugs, listed under investigation as: “Captain Price’s hair does not appear correctly when viewing his character model at the lowest level of detail.” There is currently no timeline attached to the fix.

A Beta Full of Moving Parts

The hairline situation is a lighter moment in what has otherwise been a fairly busy beta period for the developers. According to Dexerto, the team has also been working through feedback on spawns, time-to-kill balance, and weapon tuning since the beta opened. Those are the kinds of notes that tend to dominate post-beta patch discussions. Captain Price’s beauty routine is, admittedly, a bit further down the priority list.

Still, the viral moment says something real about how deeply players are invested in these characters. Price has been a franchise anchor for years, and seeing him rendered as a budget doppelganger clearly hit a nerve. Or at least a funny bone.

The Open Beta was set to continue following the initial phase, giving more players a chance to weigh in on both the gameplay changes and, apparently, the grooming standards of special operations commanders. No word yet on whether a fix will land before the beta wraps, but the Trello card at least confirms the team knows Private Bill needs to go.
