For Australian players of GTA Online, July 28 arrived with an unwelcome surprise. The Diamond Casino and Resort, which has been up and running since 2019, is now completely off-limits to players in Australia. No table games, no lucky wheel, nothing. As reported by Dexerto, players flagged the sudden lockout on Reddit and the GTA Forums website, and the reaction was pretty much what you would expect.

“RIP Australian GTA Online,” one Redditor wrote. The frustration did not stop there. “Crazy how you can bet your life savings on your irl phone through sports betting apps, but you can’t gamble fictional currency on a rated 18+ game,” another user said. “Literally who was this harming??” asked a third.

Those are fair questions, even if the answers are tangled up in the complicated and often inconsistent global patchwork of laws governing gambling and in-game loot box mechanics.

Not the First Country, Won’t Be the Last

Australia is not breaking new ground here. According to Dexerto, Greece, South Korea, and Qatar have had restricted casino access for years. Players in those countries can actually enter the Diamond Casino and watch other people gamble, but they cannot place bets themselves or spin the daily lucky wheel. It is a strange middle ground, something like being allowed into a poker room but forced to sit on your hands.

That lucky wheel restriction carries a specific sting for players in restricted regions: the Lost Slamvan, widely regarded as the rarest car in GTA Online, can only be won through the wheel. No spin, no Slamvan. Ever. That door is now shut for Australian players the same way it has been for players in those other three countries.

The exact regulatory reasoning behind Australia’s new restriction was not confirmed in Rockstar’s own words, at least not as of this writing. But Australia has been tightening its approach to gambling-adjacent game mechanics for a while, and GTA Online’s casino has always occupied uneasy territory in that conversation.

Red Dead is Caught in the Crossfire Too

Here is where things get a bit broader. Australian players have reported that the casino lockout is not limited to GTA Online. Red Dead Online’s card games, a staple of the frontier multiplayer experience, have also stopped working for players in Australia, according to reports surfaced by Dexerto. One player noted that buying and selling chips is technically still possible but described it as “next to useless” without the actual games to spend them on.

So two separate Rockstar multiplayer titles, both with gambling-flavored mechanics, have had those features pulled in the same region at the same time. That is almost certainly not a coincidence.

The Bigger Picture for Rockstar in Australia

The timing is notable. Dexerto also reported recently that GTA 6 players in Australia will need to provide real driver’s licenses or other official IDs to play when the game launches, a requirement tied to Australian regulations. GTA 5 only just launched in Saudi Arabia after a 12-year wait, which is a reminder of how differently individual countries approach Rockstar’s catalog.

For the Australian players who have spent years in the Diamond Casino, chasing the Lucky Wheel or grinding for chips, the lockout is a genuine loss after seven years of open access. The casino was just part of the rhythm of playing GTA Online, and now a significant piece of that is simply gone.

Whether Rockstar finds a workaround, adjusts the mechanics to satisfy Australian regulators, or simply leaves the casino dark down under remains to be seen. For now, players in the country are left watching others gamble while they cannot touch a chip.
