Call of Duty's official account sent a beta code to a fan who hated the MW4 trailer

A critique met with a free beta code

Some community managers block critics. Some argue back. The official Call of Duty account on X apparently just hands out beta codes.

As reported by Dexerto, a player going by TristanSpoof quote-posted a reshare of the Modern Warfare 4 reveal trailer last week and was not subtle about his feelings. He called it bad, said it looked like awful material he’d rather skip, and announced he wasn’t buying until he saw the game running live in front of him. A pretty standard bit of skeptical fan posting. What happened next was less standard.

The official CallofDutyCM account replied within the hour. Rather than defending the trailer or pointing Tristan toward a highlight reel, the account told him he’d be seeing it live this weekend anyway, then offered to DM over a beta code so he could try it himself. “Well good thing you get to see it live this weekend! DMing you a beta code too if you want to give it a try. Have fun!” the account wrote, according to Dexerto.

Tristan accepted. He replied with a gif of Leonardo DiCaprio raising a toast, which feels like the correct response to that situation.

Context behind the skepticism

To his credit, Tristan was not trolling from the outside. He later clarified that he has logged over 50,000 hours across Call of Duty titles since 2009, per Dexerto. That is not a number you reach while being indifferent to a franchise. “This new game just doesn’t speak to me,” he said, though he did promise he’d give the beta a fair shot now that he had a code.

Fifty thousand hours is the kind of number that puts someone well past the point of casual fandom and into something closer to a second occupation. When someone with that kind of history says a trailer isn’t working for them, it’s a different signal than a random passerby dunking on a game they never played. The Call of Duty account seems to have understood the distinction, or at least acted like it did.

Goodwill spreads, briefly

TristanSpoof wasn’t the only one who walked away with something. According to Dexerto, another user going by Sly The Sledgehammer saw what was happening, called the account “goated,” and simply asked for a code. He got one too. It’s unclear how wide the giveaway stretched, but for at least a few minutes on August 19, posting skeptically at a major game publisher’s social account had a genuinely positive expected value.

The timing matters here. As Dexerto notes, this beta is the first one to bundle Warzone, the campaign, and multiplayer together into a single test weekend, which is itself a notable structural change for how Activision is presenting the game to players before launch.

What the beta looks like

Early access runs August 21 through 25, with the open period following from August 28 through September 1. Switch 2 players come in during that second wave, according to Dexerto. Modern Warfare 4 itself is set to launch October 23.

One notable detail: the game is skipping Xbox Game Pass at launch, unlike the last two Black Ops entries. For players who have been relying on Game Pass to access new Call of Duty releases on day one, that represents a real change in how they’ll need to approach this one.

For TristanSpoof, the whole thing ended with a free weekend of gameplay he wasn’t planning to buy. Whether the beta changes his mind or confirms his initial read on the trailer, he at least owes that experience to being honest about what he thought of a sixty-second video.
